I had anticipated setting up camp in the early afternoon. It was now early evening, the rain was coming down in buckets and I had just left the flooded campground where I had hoped to stay so Cayenne, French Guiana was the new destination. A closed bridge and unscrupulous ferry operator had chewed up my entire morning and saw me running the road from St Georges far too late in the day.

In retrospect it wasn’t the best idea I have ever had. The visa application for Suriname went extraordinarily quick and I decided to leave Cayenne for the border. Now I stood on a dark street in a frontier village in Suriname with no hotel, a burnt out headlight and a passport with no entry stamp. Smoke must have been coming out of my ears because it was the fire department that ended up coming to my rescue.
